The event itself was a fairly intimate affair with 18 attendees. I spent hours upon hours going through the slides and making sure that the 2 hours that people were investing to attend the event would be well worth it! Here are some of the main things that I covered:
Research is key
I started off with a little bit about market research and why it is super important no matter what product or service you plan to sell online. Your market research is the foundation to your entire business operation. It does not matter how good your marketing is, if you are trying to sell a product or offer a service that people do not actually need, want or desire then you will not make enough sales to stay in business.
As I always say, ‘the better you know your customers the easier it is to sell to them’. This again ties into market research. You need to understand who your potential customer is, what pain points they have and how you can create a product or service that helps to make their life easier and in a way that is better than your competitors.
Building an online following
If you desire to make real sales online, you must be building a following on the main social media platforms that you know your customers spend time on. You need to be creating content that attracts them in and gives them a reason to want to stick around and follow you. The best way to build a following on any social media platform is to produce valuable content. Content that is valuable to your ideal clients. Your social media platforms should not just be you trying to sell your product or service all the time.
As well as building a following on social media, you should also be leading people to your ‘lead magnet’ to help you to build your email list. Your email list is super important, these are likely to be the people who visit your website often and make purchases from it on a regular basis. You should be nurturing your email list by mailing them often with new products that can purchase, content that they can read and this will help you to build trust with your most loyal online followers.
Search Engine optimisation
Google itself counts for roughly 40% of the entire internets traffic and as a result it cannot be ignored. You should be trying to optimise your website to appear more highly in the natural search results in Google, Yahoo and Bing so that when your potential customers type something into the search engines that relates to your business, you can actually be found. Some of the key SEO tips I gave at my event were to:
- Make sure you are posting quality content on your website consistently
- Put your keywords in key places on your webpages and articles including your URL, Header and the body of your content
- Use variations of your keywords
- Blog about topics that are actually getting searched for frequently
- Create a Google Search Console account and a Bing Webmaster Tools account
